The ESG Value Pathway: from obligations to long-term business value
By Geoff Gourley · 8/25/2026
ESG should not end with a report. It should build long-term business value.
That thinking sits behind the ESG Value Pathway, a new framework developed by ESG&I to show how organisations can move from ESG obligations to durable commercial advantage.
Stage 1 — Understand
Build a defensible baseline by identifying what matters, what is required and where the gaps sit. This includes material requirements, maturity, strategy, targets and reporting confidence.
Decision lens: Can we stand behind what we report?
Outcome: a trusted ESG baseline.
Stage 2 — Embed
Make ESG part of the operating model. Strategy must translate into governance, accountability, controls, risk analytics, supply-chain engagement, reliable data and management routines.
Decision lens: Is ESG owned, governed and data-enabled?
Outcome: scalable ESG capability.
Stage 3 — Leverage
Turn that capability into durable advantage. This is where ESG can strengthen sustainable strategy, business model innovation, decarbonisation, capital access, circular value, a just transition and enterprise resilience.
Decision lens: Where can ESG create the greatest value?
Outcome: sustainable long-term value.
Why it matters
The concept is straightforward. ESG maturity grows when an organisation progresses from understanding its obligations, to embedding the right capabilities, and ultimately using those capabilities to make better decisions and build a more resilient business.
